Summary:
Fabrega wrote that the flow state is a state of complete and absolute clarity, where the world fades away and the people experiencing it have the ability to focus solely on the task at hand. People enter this state when they face a hard challenge, but they have the necessary skill level to complete it. If people attempting to enter the flow state try to complete a challenge that is too easy for them, they will become bored, while if they tried to tackle a challenge that is above their heads, they will get frustrated and not be able to complete it. In order to enter this pleasurable state of focus, one must practice the needed skills in order to complete the challenge, as well as stay on task during that challenge. The flow state is a state of being that requires extreme focus and skill to achieve, but once somebody has entered the flow state, he/she describes it as a joyous and amazing feeling (Fabrega).
Reflection:
I have only entered the flow state once, and I remember it clearly. I was playing in the playoffs of the middle school basketball season, and about a minute into the game I hit my first shot. After that shot, something clicked inside of me and every single other shot I took went in. All of my focus was on keeping the correct form, lining myself up, and shooting with the correct amount of force, but I didn't have to think about doing any of those things. My mind was completely focused, and I didn't have to think about what I was doing, I just did it. I enjoyed reading this article because it shed a little light on what it was I experienced during that game and how to possibly achieve it again.
