How the oceans formed

About 3.8 billions years ago the ocean formed. It took multiple steps for the ocean to form. First, when earth formed there was water vapor mixed in with all the gases. Once the earth cooled, the water vapor turned into its water form and started raining. This rain was continuous for 10 million years. The rain then went into the low-lying areas and formed ponds. These ponds then turned into lakes. Next, the lakes soon became know as the “oceans”.

The tectonic plates played a huge role in the forming of the ocean for many reasons. One, about two million years ago the outer shell of the earth broke into many pieces. These pieces are called tectonic plates. Once the crust broke, the tectonic plates started moving towards each other and formed mountains and high landmasses that pecked out of the water. Eventually, organisms started to show up in the sea a few hundred million years ago.
