nightmares and bad dreams

Summery of “Study Analyzes content of nightmares and bad dreams”

According to University de Montreal, nightmares have a larger emotional effect on a person than bad dreams do. In a nightmare physical aggression, death and health issues are the most common themes; however, bad dreams are frequently about personal issues. When a man has a nightmare, it is normally about a tragedy or a natural disaster, but when a woman has a nightmare they revolve around her own personal issues. Researchers do not know exactly why people dream, but it is thought that dreams might reveal an interference to the nervous system. Frequent and sometimes reoccurring nightmares can be very traumatic for some people, but through visual imagery techniques, people can change the outcome of their nightmares or dreams (Universite de Montreal, 2014).

In my opinion this article was very entertaining and thought provoking. I would be very interested in learning more about this topic and dreams in general. I have many questions such as where in the brain dreams are developed? And why are some dreams so fictional and seem to have nothing to do with reality? Also, is it possible to force your brain to dream about a specific topic?

  1. Interesting! So what's the difference between a bad dream and a night mare? I always used the terms synonymously. Is it the subject matter (as you say they are different)?
