Summary of "Spinach extract decreases cravings, aids weight loss" by Lund University
Lund University wrote about how an experiment conducted shows that spinach extract can decrease hedonic hunger nearly 100%. The thylakoids in the spinach leaves help create more hormones that make people feel full. These hormones lead to more weight loss and healthier diets. The experiment showed that women given spinach extract before breakfast loss 5 kg in comparison to women who didn't and lost 3.5 kg. The spinach extract slowed down digestion which gave the hormones, which communicate to the mind the body is satisfied, more time. This isn't done naturally because the body is not prepared for modern, processed food that doesn't take as long to digest. Overall, spinach extract delays the digestive system in a healthy way so that processed foods take just as long to digest as fresh foods (Lund University, 2014).
I think this article really just tells us a solution for processed foods that have forced their way into our daily lives. Because so many people now do not have time to have a real meal, as in fresh or made from scratch, processed foods have grown even bigger. But they do not fill us as well as healthier, fresher choices. The spinach extract solves that issue: drink a smoothie with spinach extract before breakfast. This begins an evolution of trying to find solutions to processed foods instead of just eating healthy foods to begin with. My opinion on spinach extract is great, but why do we need this?
